Syrian Government Forces Retake Village from Jihadi Rebels

Jabhat al-Nusra militants have history of beheadings and destruction of churches.

LOS ANGELES (Morning Star News) – Syrian government soldiers have retaken the ancient Christian town of Sadad from Jihadi rebels, accoding to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reports JNS.orgResidents from Sadad reported that rebels from the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization have retreated from the town after heavy fighting with the Syrian army.

The Associated Press reports that the Jabhat al-Nusra rebels targeted the village due to its strategic location on the highway 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Damascus, not because it’s Christian, but JNS notes that the group has terrorized Christians in areas it captures.

“The Islamist rebel attack against the mainly Christian, biblical village of Sadad and its hospital is just the latest barbaric act in the destruction of Syria,” John Eibner, CEO of Christian Solidarity International (CSI), told JNS.org, which covers issues related to Israel and broader global Jewish news. “Christians and other religious minorities in Syria are in danger of being eliminated.”

When Al Qaeda-linked rebel forces attacked the Christian village of Maaloula last month, they attacked homes and churches, threatening Christians with beheadings and desecrating church buildings, according to JNS. Local resistance committees backed by Syrian government forces eventually forced the rebels to withdraw.

“CSI urges the United States to terminate its direct and indirect military support for Muslim supremacist armies and to insist that the U.S.-financed opposition participate in the Geneva II negotiations with the Syrian government,” Eibner told JNS. “An end to the killing will benefit all the Syrian people and enhance stability throughout the region.”
